In this short video on Richard’s Stories, my dad looks closely at Yūgao (Lady of the Evening Faces) from One Hundred Aspects of the Moon by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, first published in 1886. This image comes from The Tale of Genji, one of the great works of Japanese literature from the year approx 1200. Yūgao appears beautiful and calm — but she is already dead.
