For the first time, “smart” airbags will be mandatory for select skiing events at this year's Winter Games. The mandatory safety measure will be compulsory for all downhill and Super G competitions. The airbags are meant to protect an athlete's chest and torso. They use motion sensors and GPS data to deploy only in a crash event. The airbags were already worn regularly by some elite skiers, including Lindsey Vonn, whose own airbag deployed during a crash in her final race prior to these games. |
