Meant for evolutionary purposes of defending vital organs against an attacker's bite, the wrinkly skin of the Chinese Shar Pei appealled to the American public--we found it cute. The Shar Pei was new to America in the 1970s and, as a breed, was on the verge of extinction. Communism had taken over Hong Kong, where the dogs are originally from, bringing a wave of new laws, including a ban on canines as luxurious "pets."
