In December 2022, a team of archaeologists from the SC State Park Service, SCDNR-Heritage Trust, and the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology (SCIAA) conducted excavations at the location of Spanish Mount Point shell mound on Edisto Beach State Park.
