The sound of cracking or popping in the knee is commonly referred to as crepitus. It is often caused by the release of gas bubbles from the fluid that lubricates the joint. This can occur due to natural changes in the joint such as aging, or from certain movements or positions. While it may be concerning, crepitus is generally considered to be a normal and harmless phenomenon in most cases.
