A panopticon is a type of prison designed by philosopher Jeremy Bentham in which a central tower allows observers to see into individual cells arranged in a circle, but doesn’t allow occupants to tell if or when they are being observed. The result is the self-regulation of behavior and the internalization of surveillance. Philosopher Michelle Foucault later argued that society itself is a form of panopticon in which individuals all police themselves based on the internalized perception of others
