This video shows timelapse images of active pāhoehoe toes as the episode 61g lava flow from Puʻu ʻŌʻō advances across the coastal plain. The pāhoehoe flow front is very fluid and active. As the flow spreads across the ground, its surface cools and develops a hardened crust. Continued addition of new lava into the interior of the flow eventually raises and breaks through the rigid crust, allowing molten lava from the interior to escape through the new openings and spread forward.
