Ethiopian President Sahle-Work Zewde left office on Monday, weeks after speculation swirled around her tenure. Ethiopia’s Federal House of People’s Representatives voted in Taye Atske Selassie, a former envoy to the UN who was appointed foreign minister earlier this year, as the new President.

Ethiopia’s parliament has replaced Sahle-Work Zewde, the country’s first female president, with Taye Astike Selassie, the former foreign minister. Taye, sworn in on Monday, will now assume the largely ceremonial role.

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - October 07, 2024 The two houses of the Ethiopian parliament on Monday appointed Foreign Minister Taye Atske Selassie as the new president of the country. The appointment followed the end of the term of current President Sahle-Work Zewde after six years of service as the country's head of state.

Sahle-Work Zewde, a former diplomat who became Ethiopia's first female in 2018, has been replaced by the foreign minister, Taye Atskeselassie.
