Despite its fame, an archaeological dig conducted by American and Jordanian researchers uncovered a hidden tomb featuring 12 human skeletons.

At the heart of the ancient city of Petra, Jordan, carved into pink sandstone cliffs, lies an elaborate monument known as the Khaznah, or the Treasury. And buried beneath that edifice, archeologists recently discovered, is a tomb with at least 12 human skeletons and artifacts that are estimated to be at least 2,000 years old.

Jordanian archaeologists first discovered hidden tombs around the Treasury, now a popular tourist site, in 2003, according to Creasman. Though the archaeologists suspected that a tomb underneath the Treasury existed, they “ran out of time” to complete their exploration, Creasman said in an email.
