Flack won two Grammys for "Killing Me Softly with His Song": record of the year and best pop vocal performance, female in 1973. The Fugees would record the song over 20 years later with Lauryn Hill singing lead vocals, breathing new life into the breakup ballad.

One singer made “Killing Me Softly” iconic, while the other was left out of its history. Later in life, they came together.

Roberta Flack did not write Killing Me Softly. There is some dispute about who did. Two music industry veterans were involved: composer Charles Fox (who also wrote a lot of TV theme songs, including The Love Boat) and lyricist Norman Gimbel.
