India has responded to China's plan of constructing the world's largest dam on the Brahmaputra river in Tibet, saying that New Delhi has urged Beijing to ensure that activities in upstream don't harm the interests of downstream states.

China announced that it is building the world's largest dam in Tibet - even larger than the Three Gorges Dam, which according to NASA, has slowed the Earth's rotation by 0.06 seconds. The new dam will be built on the Brahmaputra river.

The Brahmaputra River, a lifeline to millions in India and Bangladesh, now finds itself at the centre of a major geopolitical storm. On December 25, China approved the construction of the world's largest hydropower project on this river—known as the Yarlung Tsangpo in Tibet.

Sources said India was not informed by the Chinese side about the construction of the Brahmaputra dam project, which is the convention between the two countries, and learnt of it from media reports – the project is to cost an estimated $137 billion.

Concerns have been raised that the Chinese dam could negatively affect the ecological balance of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, through which the Brahmaputra River flows.
