Authorities say an armed suspect is dead after the person rammed a vehicle into Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township, which led to a security guard engaging the suspect in gunfire.

The FBI is investigating a car ramming attack on a large Detroit-area synagogue Thursday as a "targeted act of violence against the Jewish community," the special agent in charge for the region said

All 140 children who were on site, along with teachers and staff, escaped the incident unharmed, authorities said.

Temple Israel, the scene of an active shooter incident Thursday afternoon, is a major Reform synagogue on Walnut Lake Road in West Bloomfield. The Metro Detroit suburb is in Oakland County, in Southeast Michigan.

Jewish community leaders said they spend millions annually on security to defend against such attacks.
