Gerald Ford won’t be the only person speaking beyond the grave. Carter’s vice president, Walter Mondale, also had a eulogy he wrote for Carter read by his son, Ted Mondale. Walter Mondale died in 2021 at the age of 93. He was born four years after Carter.

A state funeral for the 39th president brought together all five living presidents and will include a eulogy from President Biden. Eulogies written by Gerald Ford and Walter Mondale will be delivered by their sons.

At the cathedral, the Armed Forces Chorus sang the hymn “Be Still My Soul” before Carter’s casket was brought inside.

Thursday's service will cap off six days of remembrance for Carter, who died on Dec. 29 at the age of 100. After the funeral, Carter will return to Georgia to be buried in his hometown of Plains, next to his beloved wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter.
