The legality of the abortion laws came under scrutiny after Michigan voters approved a constitutional amendment creating a state-level abortion right.

The Northland Family Planning Center is asking a Michigan Court of Claims judge to find three abortion laws are unconstitutional.

Abortion providers had sued the state last year, arguing a ballot proposal passed in 2022 makes certain abortion restrictions unconstitutional.

That amendment, called Reproductive Freedom for All, was passed by voters in 2022. Attorneys with the Michigan Attorney General’s Office argue that the 24-hour waiting period does not burden access to abortion.

The law in question requires patients to wait 24 hours after getting counseling materials before getting an abortion.

While Democrats are beside themselves that Donald Trump is once again president, the rest of the country has a much rosier outlook.
