A 40-pound olive ridley sea turtle was discovered dead on Sunset Beach near Fort Stevens State Park, the Seaside Aquarium reported yesterday afternoon. The organization says recent storm systems moving up from the south have been linked to the increased number of sea turtle strandings along the Oregon and Washington coasts.

When sea turtles are found on Oregon or Washington beaches it’s usually due to hypothermia, and they rarely survive, the aquarium said. Those that do live are taken to the Oregon Coast Aquarium or the Seattle Aquarium. When stabilized, the turtle is transferred to a center in California, where it is released back into the wild in warmer waters.
