After three decades soaring as an unorthodox visionary, Pharrell Williams is prepared to share the narrative behind his journey to cultural prominence.

Oscar winner Morgan Neville tells IndieWire about merging documentary with animation using LEGO, and how Williams' synesthesia for seeing music as swirls of color became the eureka moment.

"Piece by Piece" is a bright, clever song-filled biopic that pretends it's a behind-the-scenes documentary using small plastic bricks, angles and curves to celebrate an artist known for his quirky soul. It is deep and surreal and often adorable. Is it high concept or low? Like Williams, it's a bit of both.

Another megastar in Piece by Piece is Gwen Stefani, who was and still is a popular coach on The Voice. Some of Stefani's most popular songs include "The Sweet Escape", "Hollaback Girl", and "Rich Girl". The pop star has even tried her hand at acting on occasion, having previously appeared in Trolls, The Aviator, and more.

"Piece by Piece" tells the story of Pharrell Williams' journey to becoming an iconic producer. It includes interviews with Lego versions of stars including Snoop Dogg and Jay-Z.

The toymaker has found success in fictional films. But with “Piece by Piece,” about the life of Mr. Williams, it has gotten into a new genre.

The singer and producer is the subject of Morgan Neville’s film, which takes the odd but aptly playful approach of exploring his biography through the colorful toys.
