Low-cost airlines often operate on tight schedules with little room for maneuver, making them more vulnerable to severe disruptions like those caused by the snowstorm.

The bad weather conditions quickly translated to flight disruptions with more than 1,490 flights canceled within, into, or out of the U.S. as of Monday morning, according to flight tracker FlightAware. That followed more than 1,800 flights that were canceled on Sunday.

Airlines in the United States canceled more than 1,300 flights on Monday after a winter storm brought snow, ice and freezing temperatures to a broad swath of the country.
