It was championship racing at its best, as Benson Kipruto beat Alexander Mutiso by less than a second and Hellen Obiri set a course record.

Technically, the New York City Marathon finish line each year closes at 10 p.m., and this year’s race saw a record-breaking 59,226 competitors log official times to make it the largest marathon ever. But the cutoff doesn’t mean the Big Apple party stops before the last person out on the course completes the full journey through the five boroughs.

It took a photo finish to determine the men's winner of the 2025 New York City Marathon. Despite posting the same finishing time, Kenyan Benson Kipruto narrowly beat out country-mate Alexander Mutiso Munyao to win the event. Both runners finished with a time of 2:08:09, with Kipruto finishing .16 seconds before Munyao.

In his first New York City Marathon, and in perhaps his final marathon as a pro, Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya placed 17th in 2:14:36 at today’s New York City Marathon. Kipchoge, who turns 41 on Wednesday, lost touch with the lead pack during the 16th mile.

A 66-year-old Baltimore woman who had lost her sight and was declared legally blind completed the TCS New York City Marathon​ on Sunday.
