Woonsocket based CVS said they plan to layoff a total of 632 in-person and remote workers starting on Dec. 8 in order to “slash costs.” The cuts include 1 percent of their workforce, and a total of $2 million dollars in corporate costs.

Only 153 of the terminated employees work at the Woonsocket headquarters or surrounding facilities while the remaining affected employees work remotely, reporting to leaders in Woonsocket.

The company announced on Sept. 30 it was laying off nearly 3,000 people nationally as it seeks to cut $2 billion in expenses and explores breaking up the company.

According to the notice, the layoffs will be effective between Dec. 8 through Dec. 21, 2024. Last week, CVS Health confirmed it planned to cut 2,900 jobs, mostly in corporate roles. The 632 noticed Rhode Island layoffs represent 22% of the total planned job cuts.

The Woonsocket-headquartered company filed its required “Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification” (WARN) letter with the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training, which was posted on Monday. CVS wrote the following:

A notice filed to the Department of Labor and Training indicates that CVS Health will be laying off 632 employees that report to Rhode Island offices.

CVS filed a WARN notice with the state that it intends to lay off 153 jobs based in RI and hundreds more remote jobs that report into RI.
