Head of Taiwan's National Science Council says TSMC is planning additional fabs in Europe. TSMC denies that such a decision has been made.

TSMC, which is the world’s biggest chipmaker and produces most of its semiconductors in Taiwan, is spending tens of billions of dollars to set up new sites in the US, Japan and Germany, partly to hedge against rising geopolitical tensions with China.

TSMC is planning to expand operations in Europe, following its first chip fab in the region, in Dresden, Germany.

TSMC broke ground on its €10 billion ($10.9bn) Dresden fab in August 2024, with the site due to be operational by late 2027. At full capacity, it will produce 40,000 wafers, focusing on the company’s 28nm, 22nm, and 16/12m nodes.

TSMC is planning more plants in Europe with a focus on the market for AI chips, according to a senior Taiwanese official.

TSMC is investing heavily in new sites across the globe, including the US, Japan, and Germany, to mitigate geopolitical risks.
