California firefighters could make more headway in containing three major wildfires burning in and around Los Angeles on Friday, as the latest round of blistering winds calm and the area's first rainfall in months arrives over the weekend.

A wet pattern will bring periods of rain and showers to Southern California, dropping an inch or two in the Los Angeles region — the most to fall since mid-April. It will be key for firefighters continuing to battle flames.

The rainfall isn’t expected to cause damage this weekend, but officials still urge the public to stay prepared.

Warnings of further wind and rain have been issued for the West Midlands this weekend as communities recover from the effects of Storm Éowyn. Herefordshire, Shropshire and Worcestershire are on alert for strong winds on Sunday, with a yellow warning of gusts which could reach up to 70mph on exposed hills, the Met Office says.

Away from the areas expected to be worst-hit by Storm Éowyn less severe amber and yellow warnings for both wind and rain have been issued, with 11 warnings in place for the UK on Friday and Saturday.
