Those looking for a doughnut on the go from a longtime favorite could soon be in luck again, as Krispy Kreme is tentatively plotting a return to Minnesota for the first time since 2008. The North Carolina-based doughnut and coffee chain that has more than 350 locations nationwide says it will look to move into a shuttered CVS location at 5696 University Avenue NE in Fridley.

Years after Krispy Kreme vanished from Minnesota following a much-ballyhooed opening blitz, the doughnut chain is planning to return to the state.According to Fridley city officials, the company has submitted a building permit for a location at 5696 University Avenue.

Krispy Kreme, which vanished from Minnesota with the closure of the state's last location in 2008, is planning a comeback. The North Carolina-based doughnut chain is preparing to take over the former CVS Pharmacy at 5659 University Avenue in Fridley, construction documents show.

The multinational donut chain could start construction by late December, according to Fridley’s planning manager.

Krispy Kreme will undergo an exterior and interior remodel of the building, with construction estimated to start at the beginning of the year, said Fridley Planning Manager Stacy Stromberg. The building will also have a drive-thru and 72 parking stalls.
