A powerful magnitude 8.7 earthquake struck off Russia's far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday, triggering a Pacific Ocean tsunami warning.

Kamchatka is a 1,250-kilometre-long peninsula located in the Far East of Russia. The Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Okhotsk serve as the eastern and western coastlines of the peninsula, respectively.

Japan's meteorological agency said on Wednesday that a powerful earthquake hit near Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula and issued a tsunami advisory for Japan.
