Cocoa High's metal detectors, installed this school year, caught a handgun in the possession of a student Monday morning. School leaders are crediting new technology with possibly preventing a tragedy at Cocoa High School on Monday. At 8:30 a.m., a 15-year-old boy was taken into custody at Cocoa High School. He is facing felony charges of possession of a firearm on school grounds.

A student attempting to bring a handgun onto Cocoa High School’s campus was apprehended Monday morning after being detected by the school’s OPENGATE Weapons Detection system, school officials confirmed.
