On Xbox Series X, Clair Obscur has two performance modes - one that aims for 30FPS with higher fidelity, and one that drops resolution and visual detail for smoother 60FPS playback. Both of these modes look fairly stable to our eye - although we do see some frame rate dips when cutscenes play out, particularly in the 60FPS performance mode.

And perhaps therein lies the secret to its success. The studio is small, independent, and able to follow its own direction without answering to shareholders. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a AA game, not a AAA, but you wouldn’t know it by looking at the game’s gorgeous art and engrossing, haunting soundtrack.
